One ragweed plant can grow 20 feet tall and produce 1 billion pollen particles. Unchecked, this noxious weed can overpower farm fields and choke out corn and soybean crops. But it shouldn't. The few seeds that ragweed produces are large, which attracts predators and makes the seeds harder to bury in untilled soils and crop fields. Yet the weed is everywhere, causing sneezing and itchy eyes for millions of sufferers every late summer and early fall. "It's virtually impossible to avoid ragweed because it grows all over the place," said Dr. Jonathan Parsons, associate director at Ohio State University Medical Center's Asthma Center.
