Can Adults Get Asthma?

In the Health Q&A section, Dr. Jonathan Parsons responds to a reader’s question: Many adults develop asthma after age 40. Several factors can make a person more likely to get adult-onset asthma, including allergies and obesity. Hormonal fluctuations and changes in women also might play a role. Some women first develop asthma symptoms during or after pregnancy. Different illnesses, viruses and infections also can be factors in adult-onset asthma. Many adults first experience asthma symptoms after suffering a bad cold or a bout with the flu.
